When not to massage ? Contraindicators

Overall massage is a very safe form of therapy.  There are however some instances when massage is contraindicated and should not be performed, in the interest of your health and safety.  The lists below act as a guideline for conditions to be avoided that are contraindicated.

Contra-indications requiring medical permission from your GP or health professional: in circumstances where medical permission cannot be obtained clients must give their informed consent in writing prior to treatment.

  • Any condition already being treated by a GP or another health professional e.g physiotherapist, osteopath, chiropractor or coach. 
  • Any dysfunction of the nervous system (e.g. Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Motor Neurone)
  • Auto Immune Diseases
  • Arthritis and / or Acute rheumatism
  • Asthma
  • Bell’s palsy
  • Cancer
  • Cardio vascular conditions (thrombosis, phlebitis, hypertension, hypotension, heart conditions)
  • Diabetes
  • Epilepsy
  • Haemophilia
  • Herniated disc (Slipped disc)
  • Kidney infections
  • Liver disorder
  • Medical oedema
  • Nervous / psychotic conditions
  • Osteoporosis
  • Postural deformities
  • Pregnancy
  • Recent operations
  • Spastic conditions (an abnormal increase in muscle tone or stiffness)
  • Trapped / pinched nerve (e.g. sciatica) and / or any Inflamed nerve
  • Undiagnosed pain
  • When taking prescribed medication
  • Whiplash

 

Contra-indications that restrict treatment: it may not be considered appropriate to give treatment at this time.  

  • Abdomen (first few days of menstruation depending how you feel)
  • After eating a heavy meal
  • Cervical spondylitis
  • Contagious or infectious diseases, e.g COVID, meningitis, athletes foot. 
  • Cuts, bruises, abrasions, scar tissue (2 years for major operation and 6 months for a small scar)
  • Diarrhoea and vomiting
  • Embolism / Deep Vein Thrombosis
  • Fever 
  • Gastric ulcers
  • Haematoma
  • Hernia
  • Hormonal implants
  • Inflammation
  • Neuritis
  • Pregnancy 1st trimester & breast feeding
  • Recent fractures (minimum 3 months)
  • Skin diseases and  / or hypersensitive skin
  • Sunburn
  • Tattoo within the last month
  • Under the influence of recreational drugs or alcohol
  • Undiagnosed lumps and bump and / or any localised swelling
